back manual anchors mounting 2 labels Guide your new thermostat checklist tools supplies No 2 Phillips screwdriver Small pocket screwdriver Drill Drill bit 3 16 for drywall 7 32 for plaster Hammer Pencil Electrical tape Level optional Two fresh AA alkaline batteries Programmable Thermostat your new thermostat your old thermostat Turn off power at heating cooling system or fuse circuit breaker panel Remove cover and thermostat but leave wallplate with wires attached wallplate in place there a sealed tube containing mercury so see inside front cover of this manual proper disposal instructions thermostat Guide your new thermostat you purchase right thermostat Count wires to check the number of wires coming out of the wall and attached to terminals in your thermostat If any of them are attached to a terminal marked or do not that wire in your total the total not counting C or C1 is 5 wires or less proceed to the next page If you 6 or more wires your new thermostat may not be compatible with your system installation and call 1 800 468 1502 for advice you have 6 or more wires If so stop now may have purchased the wrong replacement Programmable Thermostat your new thermostat wires you will not use any wires are not attached to terminals in your old thermostat do not connect them your new thermostat a wire is attached to a terminal marked or disconnect it You will not it to your new thermostat the bare metal ends of each unused wire with electrical tape so it cannot touch short out other wires not use unconnected wires not use C or C1 wire Guide your new thermostat wires and remove old wallplate a screwdriver to disconnect wires one by one As you disconnect each wire it with the label matching the letter on your old thermostat Adhesive labels are in your thermostat package the old wallplate only after all wires are labeled Be careful not to let loose fall into the wall opening supplied labels securely around each wire not let wires fall into wall opening WIRE COLORS Use only letter designations identify wire types Programmable Thermostat your new thermostat wallplate and install quick reference card at bottom to remove from wallplate quick reference card after wallplate mounted see mounting instructions on 11 HERE Guide your new thermostat wallplate mounting position Pull wires through Level wallplate if desired level across tabs Mark positions of screw holes Programmable Thermostat your new thermostat wallplate Drill holes at pencil marked locations holes for drywall holes for plaster Use hammer to tap into holes until with wall Place wallplate over and insert screws level if desired tighten screws metal jumper if you both R and Rc wires Guide your new thermostat wires typical installation Match each labeled wire with letter on terminal Use a screwdriver to screw terminals wires then tighten Push any excess wire back the wall opening don match labels do not match letters on see next page your new thermostat wires less common wire designations Programmable Thermostat labels do not match letters on the thermo check the chart at right and connect to as shown here see notes below wires will be connected to both and Rc terminals remove metal see page 12 not use C X or B Wrap bare of wire with electrical tape not connect both O and B you have a heat pump Connect wire to O Wrap B wire with tape and do not use Guide
