INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS Intelligent Air Duct Smoke Detector Extended Air Speed Range 3825 Ohio Avenue St Charles Illinois 60174 FAX 630 377 6495 installing detectors please thoroughly read the Guide for Proper Use of Smoke Detectors in Duct which provides detailed information on detec spacing placement zoning wiring and special appli Copies of this manual are available from NEMA Electrical Manufacturers Association 2101 L NW Washington DC 20037 NFPA Standards 72 and should also be referenced for detailed information This manual shall be left with the owner user of equipment This detector must be tested and maintained following NFPA 72 requirements The detector be cleaned at least once a year Description HVAC system supplies conditioned air to virtually every of a building Smoke introduced into this air duct sys is distributed to the entire building Smoke detectors for use in air duct systems are used to sense the of smoke in the duct DH200PL air duct smoke detector is a photoelectric This smoke detection method combines with an housing design that samples air passing through a and allows detection of a developing hazardous condi When sufficient smoke is sensed an alarm signal is at the fire control panel monitoring the detector appropriate action can be taken to shut off fans blow and change over air handling systems etc This can the distribution or it can isolate toxic smoke and gases throughout the areas served by the duct system LEDs on each detector may illuminate if programmed the system control panel to provide a local alarm indi There is also a remote alarm output for use with devices The DH200PL has remote test capability the RTS451 RTS451KEY Remote Test Station of the Duct Smoke Detector Housing Kit DH200PL Duct Smoke Detector consists of the following items See Figure 1 1 Exploded View Of Duct Smoke Detector Components with sensor Of The Duct Smoke Detector Complete duct smoke detector assem Two 10 x 11 sheet metal mounting Two sampling tube filters One test magnet Drilling template Two foam gaskets Four 6 self tapping mounting screws the sampling tube and optional tube extension One sampling tube end cap One plastic sampling tube One 8 self tapping screw for plastic A detector sensor board DOES tube For ducts over 11 feet 0.46m longer sampling tubes must be ordered to complete the installation They must the correct length for the width of the duct where they will be installed See Table 1 on page 3 to determine sampling tube required for different duct widths of Duct Detectors National Fire Protection Association has established that DETECTORS MUST NOT BE USED AS A SUBSTITUTE OPEN AREA DETECTOR PROTECTION as a means of life safety Nor are they a substitute for early in a building regular fire detection system is strongly recommended that the user read NFPA 90A 72 and 101 Sampling Tube Installation for Ducts Less Than Feet 0.46m Wide see Figure 2 Remove the front cover Slide the plastic sampling tube into the housing bushing Align the holes in the bushing with the holes in the sam pling tube Make sure there are 6 exposed holes on the plastic sampling tube Secure with the 8 self tapping screw into the bottom of the permanent tube shown in Fig 2 For ducts greater than 11 feet 0.46m in width to sections 4 4.1 and 4.2 Secure The Detector Housing To The Duct the foam gaskets over the tube bushings as shown Figure 3 Use the two 11 long sheet metal screws to the detector housing to the duct Sampling Tube Installation for Ducts Greater 11 Feet 0.46m Wide sampling tube is identified by a series of air inlet holes the tube A plastic tube is included for ducts up to 11 0.46m wide All other lengths must be purchased Order the correct length as specified in Table for width of the duct where it will be installed It is rec that the sampling tube length extend at least across the duct width for optimal performance The tube is molded onto the base of the duct housing the A2440 00 Exhaust Tube Extension is available as accessory in those cases where the molded exhaust port not extend at least 2 inches 50mm into the duct sampling tube is always installed with the air inlet facing into the air flow To assist proper installation tube mounting flange is marked with an arrow Make the sampling tube is mounted so that the arrow points the air flow see Figure 4 Figure 5 shows the various of tube mounting configurations with respect air flow Mounting the detector housing in a vertical ori is acceptable provided that a metal sampling tube installed and the air flows directly into the sampling tube as indicated in Figure 4 2 Plastic sampling tube to duct smoke detector device will not operate without electrical power situations may cause an interruption of power The safeguards should be discussed with your local fire specialist device will not sense smoke unless the ventilation is operating order to function properly this detector must be installed to the instructions Do not exceed the electrical or specifications or the detector will not function prop This detector must be protected from the elements Sequence 1 Verify duct air flow direction and velocity 2 2 Drill the mounting holes 2 2.1 Install the sampling tube for ducts than 11 0.46m wide 2 3 Secure the detector housing to the duct 2 4 Install the sampling tube for ducts than 11 0.46m wide 2 4.1 Installation for ducts greater than 11 0.46m less than 8 feet 2.4m wide 3 4.2 Installation for ducts more than 8 wide 4 5 Install the filters 4 6 Field wiring 4 7 Perform detector check 5 8 Install the cover 5 9 Detector Maintenance and Test Procedures 5 Verify Duct Air Flow Direction And Velocity DH200PL duct smoke detector is designed to be used air handling systems having air velocities of 100 to feet per minute 0.5 to 20.32m s Be sure to check specifications to ensure that the air velocity in duct falls within these parameters If necessary use a meter to check the air velocity in the duct See Air Test section 9.1 Drill The Mounting Holes the paper backing from the mounting template Affix the template to the duct at the desired location Make sure the template lies flat and on the duct Center punch holes A and B Drill the as indicated on the template Installation For Ducts Greater Than 11 2 Feet But Less Than 8 Feet 2.4m Wide If the tube is longer than the width of the air duct drill 3 19mm hole in the duct opposite the hole already for the sampling tube Make sure the hole is 1 to 25 to 50mm below the inlet hole on the opposite of the duct to allow moisture drainage away from detector If the tube is shorter than the width of the duct install the end cap into the sampling tube as in Figure 4 Sampling tubes over 3 ft 0.91m must be supported at the end opposite the duct detector Slide the tube into the housing bushing that meets the flow first Position the tube so that the arrow points the air flow as shown in Figure 4 Secure the tube flange to the housing bushing with two self tap
